Accommodation and Travel

While it is our intention to go ahead with the FIDIC-GAMA 2020 Infrastructure Conference, with current uncertainty and the pace of developments with regard to COVID-19, the conference will not be held in April 2020. There are a variety of options and timeframes currently under review.

Current registrations will be cancelled and refunded. Sponsors and exhibitors will be refunded and can be re-contracted when future plans are confirmed.

Please look out for communications from the Conference Secretariat

Botswana

Botswana, officially the Republic of Botswana, is a landlocked country in Southern Africa. Formerly the British protectorate of Bechuanaland, Botswana adopted its new name after becoming independent within the Commonwealth on 30 September 1966. Since then, it has been a representative republic, with a consistent record of uninterrupted democratic elections and the best perceived corruption ranking in Africa since at least 1998. It is currently Africa’s oldest continuous democracy.

A mid-sized country of just over 2 million people, Botswana is one of the most sparsely populated countries in the world. Formerly one of the poorest countries in the world—with a GDP per capita of about US$70 per year in the late 1960s—Botswana has since transformed itself into one of the world’s fastest-growing economies. The economy is dominated by mining, cattle, and tourism. Botswana boasts a GDP which is one of the highest in Africa. Its high gross national income (by some estimates the fourth-largest in Africa) gives the country a relatively high standard of living and the highest Human Development Index of continental Sub-Saharan Africa.

Gaborone

Gaborone is the capital and largest city of Botswana, home to about 10% of the total population of Botswana. Gaborone City is situated between Kgale and Oodi Hills, near the confluence of the Notwane River and Segoditshane River in the south-eastern corner of Botswana. The city is served by the Sir Seretse Khama International Airport

One of the fastest-growing cities in the world, Gaborone is the economic capital as well as the government capital of Botswana. It is headquarters to numerous national and international companies as well as the Botswana Stock Exchange. Gaborone is also home to the Southern African Development Community (SADC), a regional economic community established in 1980.

Venue: Gaborone International Convention Centre (GICC)

Just a few minutes from the city centre of Gaborone and only 12 km from Sir Seretse Khama International Airport is the Grand Palm Hotel Casino and Convention Resort which is home to the Gaborone International Convention Centre (GICC). Botswana’s award-winning conference centre offers a variety of venues from small to large, banqueting facilities for up to 1,800 delegates, high-speed Wi-Fi, a business centre for essential business services, and an uninterrupted power supply.

Also within the grounds of this world-class Convention Resort you will find the Peermont Walmont and Peermont Metcourt hotels, with multiple dining and entertainment options all underpinned by warm Botswana hospitality.

Experience the stunning beauty of the world’s largest intact inland delta, the Okavango; the unimaginable vastness of the world’s second-largest game reserve, the Central Kalahari Game Reserve; the isolation and other-worldliness of the Makgadikgadi, uninhabited pans the size of Portugal; and the astoundingly prolific wildlife of the Chobe National Park.

General Information

Getting Around

Between the airport and your hotel:

Taxis are not readily available at the airport so visitors to Gaborone should plan ahead and book an airport transfer.

Four of the official conference hotels offer complimentary airport transfers (DC Louge, Masa Square, Peemont Walmont and Peermont Metcourt). Please contact your hotel directly to make your reservation

White minibuses are the most popular mode of transport in Gaborone. They are recognisable by their blue number plates and can be hailed from designated bus and taxi stops. They circulate along set routes to most of the major shopping centres.

Taxis, which can easily be identified by their blue number plates are surprisingly difficult to come by in Gaborone. Very few taxis drive the streets looking for passengers so if you’re staying at a hotel it is best to arrange one from there. Shared taxis are quite common in Gaborone, where two or more passengers split the fare for the destination.

Money and Spending

The national currency of Botswana is the Pula, a regionally strong currency, but the US Dollar is widely accepted at lodges and hotels throughout the country. Major hotels have foreign exchange desks. All major credit cards are accepted at hotels, lodges, shops, and restaurants. However, some establishments do not accept payment by Diners or American Express.

Full banking services are only available in Botswana’s major towns, but ATMs are becoming increasingly more common.

Banking hours: 8:30am to 3:30pm Monday to Friday and 8:30am to 11:00am on Saturday.

Around the city:

In city restaurants and bars, a 10% tip is customary when the service charge is not included.

Provided the service is good, it is customary to tip safari lodge staff and guides in either Pula or any hard currency. The amount that you tip varies depending on the staff member’s role and the size of your group.

Climate

Average summer temperatures: 18°C to 38°C

Average winter temperatures: 6°C to 27°C

Rainy season: October/November to March/April
